Mark Rushbrook explained how Ford came to the deal with Red Bull.
The head of Ford`s racing division said that the company was considering various options for returning to Formula 1, including as a factory team. The American company was already involved in F1 as the owner of Jaguar, a team that was later sold to Red Bull.
The world champions will develop powertrains with Ford from 2026.
Of course, we have explored all options, and in many ways we have come a long way. Once people found out that Ford was interested or the team was at least considering a return, many people reached out to us about partnering - from existing or potential teams. We talked to some teams, but initially it seemed that none of them were suitable.
Coming back as a factory team, being an owner didn`t feel right either because we wanted to take a very strategic approach - to contribute and learn where it makes sense.
During negotiations with Red Bull, it quickly became clear that the team needed a partner who could bring what we could bring, and vice versa. It all started in the second half of 2022 and went very quickly - we knew from the very start that this was a suitable cooperation. It is very important to come to F1 at the right time, in the right way and with the right partner. We believe that is exactly what we did.
It`s certainly better to partner with someone like Red Bull rather than a rival automaker. It would be wrong or inappropriate to work on a powertrain with another car company. Of course, there were opportunities, but for us this is the wrong path, " said Rashbrkuk.
